What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy occurs when a patient breathes 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than 1.4 atmosphere absolute (ATA) in an enclosed pressure vessel. It is a form of drug which needs a trained Hyperbaric Doctor to prescribe the proper and safe dose.
How does it work?
Hyperbaric Oxygen increases the oxygen delivery to the tissues by elevating the partial pressure of oxygen. The best method of administering elevated pressures of oxygen is by means of a hyperbaric chamber.
Many diseases are associated with ischemia (low oxygen level in the tissue) and poor oxygen delivery because of tissue trauma or other causes of pulmonary insufficiency. Hyperbaric oxygen can restore normal tissue oxygen levels by saturating the tissue with maximum amount of oxygen at any given pressure (Hyperoxygenation).
How long is the treatment procedure?
The procedure normally takes about 90-120 minutes. This is dependent on how clients can tolerate pressurization by effective equalization technique.
Are there side-effects?
The most common side effect is barotrauma to the middle ear. But this is prevented by practicing proper and effective equalization technique.
